About Us

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that works to keep nature nearby and conserve ecologically critical land in West Michigan. We protect land by creating public nature preserves, providing support to communities and local governments creating natural areas, and helping private landowners protect their own land.

Last week, Land Conservancy of West Michigan staff joined staff from @cra_rivercare and the @michigandnr to participate in a fish survey on the Pere Marquette River. We surveyed a location just downstream from a conservation easement property where the CRA is working with the landowner to restore habitat conditions on the shoreline. Another survey will be done after the restoration work is complete to measure impact.

While a conservation easement legally ensures a property's conservation value is protected, it is the landowner's prerogative to take on more intensive restoration projects like this one. We are grateful to the landowners who collaborate with us and other conservation organizations to improve the habitat quality on their land!

Moths On Tour night #2 was another great show. Nearly 30 people joined us at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve to appreciate and learn about the unique insects we attracted to our moth sheets that evening. Thanks again to Querkus Creative, John Ball Zoo, and NCEC for partnering with us to host this event--and to everyone who came out to celebrate biodiversity!

The next and final stop on Moths on Tour is at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve on Tuesday, August 19. We hope you can join us! Learn more: https://naturenearby.org/events/monthly-outing-081925/

We are starting to see early signs of restoration progress at Richmond Woods and McDuffee Creek Nature Preserves in Newaygo County. None of these oak savanna species were present before restoration began a few years ago, funded with support from the Michigan DNR's Wildlife Habitat Grant Program via the National Wild Turkey Federation. 🌱

Most of these plants sprouted from seeds we planted as part of the restoration. The last photo shows a species of grass we didn't plant, but emerged from the existing seed bank at Richmond Woods Nature Preserve. Avenella flexuosa (hair grass) now grows happily in the canopy openings created with prescribed fire and herbicide treatment. This is a good sign that the restoration we are doing is working. LCWM Volunteer Stephanie Gerling attended our first Moths On Tour event in June and wrote about her experience:

"Our first moth arrived at 10:20pm – making its presence known among a smattering of bugs, and with an audible cheer from the group. The excitement didn’t wane for the other beetles, damselflies, and lacewings that showed off amongst the shadows. Attendees of all ages became citizen scientists, adding in their notes to the iNaturalist app, an online social network that helps identify plants and animals while contributing helpful data to local communities and conservation progress."

This could be YOUR Friday night! Join us at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve tonight for an evening of bug appreciation. Learn more and sign up to attend on our website! And read the rest of Stephanie's blog on our website. Link in our profile!

The West Michigan Conservation Network recognized LCWM Conservation Director Justin Heslinga at their recent annual meeting. They honored him with their "Outstanding Conservation Educator Award," recognizing his conservation leadership and willingness to educate, guide, and inspire.

If you are lucky enough to have attended a hike, program, or presentation by Justin, you know the award is well deserved. LCWM is proud to have Justin on our team. Thank you to WMCN for recognizing him!

This Friday, join LCWM and @querkuscreative for the second installment of Moths On Tour! This time, we'll meet at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve in Bitely with our partners at @ncec2.

At this nighttime event, we will be using a practice called lightsheeting (or moth sheeting) to observe and identify moths and other insects. We will hang and illuminate two sheets in different habitat types to see what kinds of unique insects we can attract. Learn more and register to attend on our website. Link in our profile!
