Thank you to the Prescribed Burn Crew members who joined us for a burn at Lamberton Lake Fen Nature Preserve earlier this week! 🔥 This preserve protects a rare prairie fen. Prairie fens were historically neighbored by fire-dependent oak savannas and openings, and many of the plants you find in a prairie fen are well adapted to fire. Fire helps free up nutrients in the soil and allows light to reach seeds that would otherwise struggle to germinate and compete with other plants. It will also keep back invasive species like glossy buckthorn, which we have worked hard to remove from the fen with the help of many volunteers. Join us this weekend to collect seeds in the prairie! For our October Second Saturday Workday, we will gather at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve to harvest seeds from the prairie restoration area. This weekend, the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education recognized LCWM Stewardship Specialist Jason Googins and his wife, Alison, for their volunteer contributions to support environmental education. They both received the 2024 Volunteer Award! It is a well-deserved recognition of their commitment to caring for the environment through sharing their knowledge about native plants and conservation. We are so inspired by the many ways they both show their passion for nature in their work and lives. Congratulations, Jason and Alison! 🌼

Thanks to everyone who joined us at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve to explore elements of fly fishing over the weekend! We hiked the trails, we learned about aquatic insects and how to use that knowledge to catch fish, and we learned how to tie a fly. Thanks especially to our friends at the @westmichiganmayflyproject for sharing their expertise and helping lead a very fun event!
