Forests are the largest terrestrial carbon sink. That means they capture carbon from the atmosphere and store it, doing critical work to offset greenhouse gas emissions and slow the warming of our planet.
59% of forest lands in the United States are privately owned—but the carbon capturing they do benefits all of us. If they were to be cut down and developed, that benefit would be completely reversed.

When a forest landowner works with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan to establish a conservation agreement, their land is protected from development forever. Furthermore, their partnership with the Land Conservancy means they have access to valuable management resources to ensure their forest is healthy for now and for the future, protecting this important tool in the fight against climate change.

Thanks to people like you, the view of this field went from monotone to polychrome, and not the other way around.

When the Land Conservancy of West Michigan acquired Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve in 1989, this vibrant field was filled with one species of nonnative grass. Without the help of several partners, volunteers and the generous landowners, this parcel might not have become the thriving and diverse prairie ecosystem it now is, supporting 119 plant species, 120 known bird species and innumerable insects. Because of their support—and the support of people like you—anyone can visit Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve right in Rockford, Michigan in late May or early June and be greeted by this magnificent view of acres and acres of wild lupine.

Fortunately, a generous community stepped up and agreed with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Blandford Nature Center when they decided to protect The Highlands in Grand Rapids two years ago. Now, instead of condos, what you see when you stand on the highest point at The Highlands is a verdant sloping landscape, dappled with shimmering wetlands and alive with diverse plants, insects and wildlife—a rare natural oasis in an urban metropolis.

It’s not just about aesthetics. Protecting wild spaces, and re-wilding others, helps ensure health and quality of life for current and future generations of humans, plants and wildlife alike.
