Clematis virginiana has some intriguing common names, including devil's darning needles, devil's hair, love vine, traveller's joy, virgin's bower, and Virginia virgin's bower. This native vine produces showy white flowers--and the seed heads make a statement, too.

The clematis clearwing moth (Alcathoe caudata) uses Clematis virginiana as one of its larval host plants. Its caterpillars bore into the roots of the plant.

We recently had the pleasure of joining staff from @johnballzoogr and @ottawacountyparks to mount kestrel nest boxes at Upper Macatawa Natural Area. These nest boxes are part of the zoo's Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring program, where volunteers can help collect data on American kestrel population trends and biology.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan helped Ottawa County Parks acquire 314 acres of Upper Macatawa Natural Area, a 612-acre park, in 2005 and 2007 through the purchase of conservation easements.
