For our final Earth Month Video, we are highlighting a way volunteers have been supporting the health of West Michigan’s natural lands for over 20 years.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan supports planet Earth by protecting and restoring rare habitats that are essential to our region’s biodiversity. One such habitat is the tallgrass prairie. Through the leadership and support of volunteers, the Land Conservancy’s Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve is home to one of the longest running and most biodiverse prairie restoration projects in Michigan. Hear all about the project from LCWM’s Conservation Director Justin Heslinga in today’s video.

This week’s action items are things you can do year round with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan.

The West Michigan City Nature Challenge kicks off next Friday. Want a primer on how to participate? Lea Sevigny of @joyfulwildcrafting is hosting a workshop to help you prepare for the challenge. Join Lea and Travis Kurtz of John Ball Zoo for an online class on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:00pm.

This class is for anyone who…

- has never used iNaturalist,
- doesn’t know how to join the City Nature Challenge project,
- who would like tips on how to get more accurate species identification of the pictures you upload, or
- has experience with iNaturalist but wants to hang out in a virtual setting with like-minded people for an hour.

Later this month, join @johnballzoogr and partner organizations for the West Michigan City Nature Challenge! The event is a 4-day BioBlitz that encourages people to get outside and document the life found in our region. All you need to do to participate is take photos of wild species using the iNaturalist app between April 26-29. Learn more in this week’s Earth Month video!

Thanks to everyone who joined us at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve over the weekend to haul lumber and build boardwalks to expand the trail system! These boardwalks will help visitors comfortably explore some of the most stunning parts of the preserve while preserving the ecological integrity of the habitats. We are grateful to have volunteer support--many hands make light work! 🛠🥾🌳

Thank you to the team from @westmichigancu! They have been raising funds for the Land Conservancy of West Michigan for the last few months at their locations throughout the region. With the support of the community, they raised over $1500 for nature nearby!

Their team also joined us to volunteer at The Highlands to help protect the young trees we've planted around the stream daylighting site. This crew put in 60 new tree cages in 2 hours! We are so grateful for their help ensuring these trees will be protected from deer so they can grow tall and strong. Thank you for your partnership, WMCU!
