Wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) blooms at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve. 💥 According to the University of Michigan Herbarium, this plant is one of few Michigan natives to be pollinated by hummingbirds, and you can find it growing in nearly every county.

These photos were submitted from the photo monitoring station at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve and show the impact of prescribed fire on lupine. 🔥🌱

Last year's prescribed burn cleared out dead vegetation and allowed sun to reach lupine seeds and rhizomes in the soil, stimulating a formidable bloom this year. Research has shown that lupine plants in areas that have been burned produce more seeds and pods. The heat from fire can also crack open the thick coat on lupine seeds, increasing the germination rate. In many cases, and certainly at Saul Lake Prairie, more fire = more lupine! In addition to being a beautiful spring spectacle, these blooms provide an important food source for native pollinators.

Please joining us in welcoming this season's Stewardship Interns, Sarah Jekel and Brian Coalter!

Sarah grew up in West Michigan, where the region’s diverse landscape sparked an early interest in native ecosystems. She recently earned a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies from Grand Valley State University, along with certifications in wildland firefighting. As part of the team at the Land Conservancy, she is especially excited to gain hands-on experience in habitat restoration, prescribed fire management, and help support the long-term stewardship of native habitats.

Brian grew up in Sparta, MI where his parents immersed him in the outdoors and he developed a deep appreciation for our beautiful state. He is currently seeking a B.S. In Environmental and Sustainability Studies through GVSU with a certification in GIS. He is excited to be joining LCWM to grow his experience in species identification and get to know good land management practices from those who know best!

We are excited to work with Brian and Sarah this season as they support the care of our nature preserves and conservation easements. Welcome to the team!
