Planning on bringing your pup to a preserve? Dogs are welcome at most of our preserves, but we ask that you keep them on a six-foot leash while you're there. Here are 3 reasons why you should leash your dog! 🐶

1️⃣ It’s the law, and our policy. It is against the law in Michigan to walk your dog off leash in public. Additionally, our policies require all pets to be on a six-foot leash when visiting Land Conservancy of West Michigan nature preserves. It is likewise required that you dispose of their waste.

2️⃣ It protects habitat. Off-leash dogs make the habitats we’ve restored less hospitable to the wildlife, birds, and insects we intend to welcome. For example, many species of ground-nesting birds are in decline, and they are heavily distressed by dogs and may abandon their nests if disturbed. When you let your dog run through habitat off leash, your pet is contributing to the growing problems of species decline and habitat degradation. There’s an easy way to help keep nature nearby and protected for good: Put your dog on a leash.

3️⃣ It keeps your dog safe. Your dog may be a good boy, but when you do not leash him, he becomes dangerous. Off-leash dogs make other preserve visitors and their pets fearful. Fearful people will act to protect themselves from your dog. Fearful dogs can become aggressive and attack your dog. These scenarios are easily avoided: Just leash your dog. When your dog is leashed, you protect him from the risks of getting attacked, lost, or otherwise harmed. If you love your dog, put him on a leash!

We know you love to walk in nature with your best friend. For the sake of your pet, your community, and the habitats we are working together to protect, we ask that you do so responsibly. Please, leash your dog when you visit our preserves. Thank you.

Happy Salamander Saturday! #SalamanderSaturday is an initiative started by the Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders (@fc_salamander) to raise awareness about salamanders, their habitats, and their role in the ecosystem.

Pictured here is a blue-spotted salamander, a variety of mole salamander that you can find near vernal pools and in moist woodlands. They feed on a variety of invertebrates and are important contributors to the biodiversity of these habitats. For our final Earth Month Video, we are highlighting a way volunteers have been supporting the health of West Michigan’s natural lands for over 20 years.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan supports planet Earth by protecting and restoring rare habitats that are essential to our region’s biodiversity. One such habitat is the tallgrass prairie. Through the leadership and support of volunteers, the Land Conservancy’s Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve is home to one of the longest running and most biodiverse prairie restoration projects in Michigan. Hear all about the project from LCWM’s Conservation Director Justin Heslinga in today’s video.
