This summer, join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan (LCWM), Querkus Creative, the John Ball Zoo, Grand Rapids Bug Club, and Muskegon County Parks as we shine a spotlight on some of our favorite nighttime pollinators: moths! 

Using a practice called lightsheeting (or moth sheeting), which is a method used by entomologists and nature enthusiasts alike, we will observe and identify moths at night. This method involves hanging a white sheet and illuminating it with a bright light, which attracts moths and other night-flying bugs.

This non-invasive technique is a great way to learn as a citizen scientist, provides a unique way to experience nature at night, and adds to our scientific knowledge of our local biodiversity! We recommend downloading iNaturalist prior to the event.

This event will happen outside and after dark – please come dressed for the weather and activity. We recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight, and wearing long pants and socks to protect yourself from ticks. In case of severe or dangerous weather, the event may be postponed or cancelled – if this is the case, registrants will be notified of any changes via email and social media.
