ABOUT THE EVENT
Ever wondered about prescribed fire? What makes fire such an effective land management tool, what ecosystems respond positively to fire, and how can the process be safe? Join us for this free event and get the answers to all your burning questions!
The Learn & Burn will begin at 11:00am, and is an open-house style event. Drop by to join in the following festivities:
- Live prescribed fire demonstration & interpretation
- Touch & learn with fire tools & gear
- Booths from local conservation organizations
- Door prizes for attendees
- Light snacks & refreshments
- And more!
The prescribed fire demonstration will ignite at 11:30am, and will run for approximately 1 hour. The demonstration burn will be conducted by LCWM’s staff and volunteer Burn Crew, and will take place on a 1-acre plot of prairie.
Please RSVP online for this event. In case of unfavorable burn weather, the event will be moved to the following Saturday, April 19th, 2025. Any changes to the event date will be sent via email to anyone registered online, as well as posted on all event and social media pages.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A CERTIFICATION TRAINING. The Learn & Burn is purely educational. If you are interested in participating in prescribed burns or conducting burns on your own property, learn more by visiting the Michigan Prescribed Fire Council’s website. If you are interested in joining LCWM’s volunteer Burn Crew, you can train with us on March 4 (see this link for more information).
This event is hosted by the Land Conservancy of West Michigan (LCWM) and the Michigan Prescribed Fire Council (MPFC), and is supported by the Michigan DNR’s Forest to MI Faucet grant program.
EVENT/PARKING UPDATE
Due to the amount of interest this event has generated, we have made a small update regarding parking to accommodate as many attendees as possible.
Instead of parking in the Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve parking lot on the morning of the Learn & Burn, please park at the local St. Patrick Catholic Church, who has generously allowed us to use their parking that morning. The church is located at 4351 Parnell Ave NE, Ada, MI 49301. Please carpool if possible, and park on the far eastern side of the church’s parking lot. We will have a sign for where you should park.
We will have a shuttle running between the parking lot and the preserve throughout the event, beginning as early as 10:30am. The shuttle will rotate on a ~20 minute round trip basis. If you miss the shuttle, you may need to wait 20 minutes before you are picked up. Please plan your travel accordingly. If you would like to arrive in time for ignition at 11:30am, please plan to catch the 10:30am or 10:50am shuttles.
The shuttle will be driving throughout the duration of the event, so you will be able to leave at any point.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS
The Michigan Prescribed Fire Council strives to create a culture of prescribed fire in Michigan where prescribed fire practitioners have support to manage and protect natural and created landscapes with fire safely and efficiently to achieve land management and human safety objectives.
The Land Conservancy of West Michigan is a nonprofit that works to keep nature nearby and help people protect, enjoy, and care for natural land in West Michigan. We conserve land by creating public nature preserves, providing support to communities and local governments creating natural areas, and helping private landowners protect their own land.
The Forest to MI Faucet grant program works to educate people in Michigan about connections between forests and drinking water, help municipal water utilities implement source water protection plans to lower treatment costs, protect forests from land use change with conservation easements to retain important forests in a watershed, manage forests well (with landowner education, forest certification, Master Loggers, prescribed fire, and other methods), and expand forests by planting trees in strategic places, especially riparian zones in urban and agricultural areas.
