Protecting Land

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan (LCWM) offers positive, non-regulatory solutions to disappearing open space that benefit landowners and local communities.

If you are a landowner and want to permanently protect your property, you will not only preserve the natural beauty of the land you love, but you may be eligible for income, estate and/or property tax benefits. Review the options below and contact LCWM and your legal advisor to determine the best land conservation option for you.

LCWM permanently preserves West Michigan's natural landscape by:

Establishing Nature Preserves

LCWM acquires natural land through donation or purchase of high priority land for the purpose of creating nature preserves. LCWM nature preserves are open to the public.

Creating Conservation Easements
Conservation easements are voluntary legal agreements between a landowner and a land conservancy or government agency that permanently limit development of the property in order to protect the conservation values of the land. The land remains in private ownership and can continue to be used by the landowner. The Land Conservancy also works with developers to create easements preserving important natural land in open space developments.

Assisting Local Communities
LCWM assists local governments with identifying important natural areas, preserving lands and creating community parks.
