SUMMARY:Elements of Fly Fishing
DESCRIPTION:Join The Mayfly Project and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan for an all-ages event where we learn about the elements of fly fishing! We’ll cover the basics – fly tying\, aquatic entomology\, watershed ecology\, and more. Whether you’re new to the sport\, an expert angler\, or just curious about the outdoors\, this event is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about gentle recreation in a community of interested and passionate people. \nBetween 10:00am-12:00pm we will rotate through 3 kid (and adult!) friendly activity stations\, which will provide a small taste of the sessions Mayfly Project mentors plan with their mentees throughout the year: \n\nEducation Station: Mayfly Project mentors will present a riverside talk about all things Michigan rivers and streams. Topics covered will include: seasons of Michigan fisheries\, entomology of aquatic insects\, and 101 techniques for fishing streams and creeks. At this station\, we’ll get some up-close experience with the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette.\nCreation Station: Discover the wonder of tying flys for fly fishing with Mayfly Project mentors! You’ll learn how to tie the famous Woolly Bugger\, and will be able to take your creations home with you. Supplies will be provided.\nExploration Station: Land Conservancy of West Michigan staff will lead a guided hike of McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve. Learn about the preserve’s ecosystem\, what restoration work the Land Conservancy of West Michigan has been doing\, and how the health of a water system is connected to the health of the land around it. The hike will cover ~1 mile on uneven\, natural surface trails.\n\nThere will also be opportunities to meet Mayfly Project mentors and Land Conservancy of West Michigan staff to learn more about their work and how you can get involved! \nThis event will happen rain or shine – please come dressed for the weather. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Tickets for this event are $10. Proceeds from sales will go directly to funding the projects and programming of The Mayfly Project and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. \nPlease reach out to kendra@naturenearby.org with any questions. \nRegister to Attend \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Moth Sheeting After Dark at Saul Lake Bog
DESCRIPTION:Join LCWM\, Spencer High (Querkus Creative)\, and Travis Kurtz (Community Science Coordinator at the John Ball Zoo) at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve as we learn about\, observe\, and document moths! \nMoth sheeting is a great way to participate in community science and learn more about the night shift pollinators in your own neighborhood. We will have two light sheets to attract moths and other cool insects. Moths will begin to accumulate around the light once it gets dark. As they gather\, we’ll take a closer look at them and try to identify who is who. \nWhile we wait for moths to come to the sheets\, we’ll take a quick hike around the preserve to learn about another night critter: bats! Using an Echo Meter Touch 2 (a tool that allows us to record and identify bats in real time)\, we’ll learn a bit more about the bats of West Michigan and why they’re important. \nWe recommend downloading iNaturalist prior to this event. \nThis event will happen outside – please come dressed for the weather. Headlamps/flashlights are encouraged. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, the event may be postponed or cancelled. Registrants will be notified of any changes via email and LCWM’s social media. \nPlease register to attend! \n  \n\n\n Get Tickets\n \n \nRegister on Qgiv

SUMMARY:Diving into Vernal Pools at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Newaygo County Environmental Coalition (NCEC) at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve as we explore a fascinating habitat: vernal pools! \nVernal pools are unique wetlands because they are seasonally flooded and not inhabited by fish. They fill up with rain and snowmelt in spring and disappear in summer. Despite their ephemeral nature\, these wetlands are hubs for biodiversity and feature a remarkable cast of invertebrates and amphibians. Fairy shrimp\, fingernail clams\, spotted salamanders\, and wood frogs all prefer the conditions offered by a vernal pool. \nVernal pools are not well-protected wetlands under federal or state laws. Because they are small\, isolated\, and seasonal\, they have also not been well documented in Michigan. That’s where the Vernal Pool Patrol comes in! The Vernal Pool Patrol program works with community scientists\, adults and youth\, and local program coordinators to identify\, map\, monitor\, and provide data on vernal pools across the state. Information collected by Vernal Pool Patrol community scientists is submitted or entered into the statewide Michigan Vernal Pool Database and will be used to help inform and guide management and conservation of vernal pools and associated plants and animals in Michigan. \nNCEC’s Katie Clark will lead us in this family-friendly\, entry-level introduction to vernal pools as we learn about what natural features identify a vernal pool\, the unique critters that depend on them\, and how to get involved in the Vernal Pool Project. \nPlease wear tall\, waterproof boots. Supplies are limited\, registration is required to attend. \nPARKING INSTRUCTIONS: Parking is available on the edge of the preserve off 14 mile road (follow LCWM event signs through the gate and follow the two-track to the first field) and on the sides of 14 mile road. \n  \n\n\nGet Tickets\n \n \nRegister on Qgiv

SUMMARY:LCWM Prescribed Burn Crew Training
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to take part in a prescribed burn? Now’s your chance to complete the required training to join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s Burn Crew! \nFire is an important part of maintaining many West Michigan ecosystems. Volunteer burn crew members play an important role in all stages of prescribed burning\, assisting with burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control and monitoring. \nAttending this training is required to join the burn crew. Past burn crew members are encouraged to attend the training as a refresher. Space is limited\, and pre-registration is required to attend. \nSign up for the training to become a part of the Land Conservancy’s burn crew and play a role in a critically important ecological restoration activity! \nPLEASE NOTE: This training does not provide attendees any official certification for conducting prescribed burns. It allows attendees to participate in prescribed burns conducted by the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. \n  \n\nGet Tickets\n \n \nRegister on QGiv

Fortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved. \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas.
