Join us for this free event and get the answers to all your burning questions! \nThe Learn & Burn will begin at 11:00am\, and is an open-house style event. Drop by to join in the following festivities: \n\nLive prescribed fire demonstration & interpretation\nTouch & learn with fire tools & gear\nBooths from local conservation organizations\nDoor prizes for attendees\nLight snacks & refreshments\nAnd more!\n\nThe prescribed fire demonstration will ignite at 11:30am\, and will run for approximately 1 hour. The demonstration burn will be conducted by LCWM’s staff and volunteer Burn Crew\, and will take place on a 1-acre plot of prairie. \nPlease RSVP online for this event. In case of unfavorable burn weather\, the event will be moved to the following Saturday\, April 19th\, 2025. The church is located at 4351 Parnell Ave NE\, Ada\, MI 49301. Please carpool if possible\, and park on the far eastern side of the church’s parking lot. We will have a sign for where you should park. \nWe will have a shuttle running between the parking lot and the preserve throughout the event\, beginning as early as 10:30am. The shuttle will rotate on a ~20 minute round trip basis. If you miss the shuttle\, you may need to wait 20 minutes before you are picked up. Please plan your travel accordingly. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species and improves wildlife habitat—restoring health to our forests\, wetlands and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each spring\, summer and fall. Volunteer burn crew members play an important role in all stages of prescribed burning\, assisting with burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control and monitoring. \nAttending this training is required to join the burn crew. Past burn crew members are encouraged to attend the training as a refresher. DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Friends of Fruitland Township Trails at Duck Creek Natural Area for a guided winter tree identification hike. \nJust a few days before the Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s Holiday Hike Challenge kicks off\, this is a great opportunity to brush up on your tree ID knowledge before competing for the Holiday Hike grand prize!   \nThe hike will be led by DNR staff Alec Zuhorski and Joshua Lubben. \nAlec is a forest health technician\, surveying for vulnerable trees and managing the invasive species that pose a threat to them. His personal pursuits also entail walking through the forest\, but slower\, looking to meet new plants\, insects\, and other folk. \nJoshua has received is BS in Conversation Biology from Lake Superior State University\, and has worked as a Forest Health technician for nearly 2 years. We will have two light sheets to attract moths and other cool insects. Moths will begin to accumulate around the light once it gets dark. As they gather\, we’ll take a closer look at them and try to identify who is who. \nWhile we wait for moths to come to the sheets\, we’ll take a quick hike around the preserve to learn about another night critter: bats! DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed: stay tuned for the new date during fall bird migration!  \nJoin the Land Conservancy of West Michigan\, Disability Network West Michigan\, and the Grand Rapids Audubon Club for a birding event at Anderson Woods Nature Preserve. The Grand Rapids Audubon Club will lead us as we hike the accessible trail\, learn the basics of birding\, and put our skills to the test. \nLocated near the lakeshore\, Anderson Woods provides important nesting and feeding habitat for migratory birds and supports resident birds that require large tracts of unbroken forest. To assist in the identification and tracking of any birds spotted on the trail\, we recommend downloading the Merlin Bird ID app. We will have some binoculars available to borrow\, but please bring your own if you have them! \nWe will cover 1 mile of trail during this event\, the max grade of which is 2%. The trailhead parking lot is reserved for accessible parking\, additional parking will be available alongside Simonelli Road. An accessible portable restroom will be available for use in the preserve parking lot. \nThis event will happen outside. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, the event may be postponed or cancelled. SUMMARY:Diving into Vernal Pools at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Newaygo County Environmental Coalition (NCEC) at McDuffee Creek Nature Preserve as we explore a fascinating habitat: vernal pools! \nVernal pools are unique wetlands because they are seasonally flooded and not inhabited by fish. They fill up with rain and snowmelt in spring and disappear in summer. Despite their ephemeral nature\, these wetlands are hubs for biodiversity and feature a remarkable cast of invertebrates and amphibians. Fairy shrimp\, fingernail clams\, spotted salamanders\, and wood frogs all prefer the conditions offered by a vernal pool. \nVernal pools are not well-protected wetlands under federal or state laws. Because they are small\, isolated\, and seasonal\, they have also not been well documented in Michigan. That’s where the Vernal Pool Patrol comes in! The Vernal Pool Patrol program works with community scientists\, adults and youth\, and local program coordinators to identify\, map\, monitor\, and provide data on vernal pools across the state. Information collected by Vernal Pool Patrol community scientists is submitted or entered into the statewide Michigan Vernal Pool Database and will be used to help inform and guide management and conservation of vernal pools and associated plants and animals in Michigan. \nNCEC’s Katie Clark will lead us in this family-friendly\, entry-level introduction to vernal pools as we learn about what natural features identify a vernal pool\, the unique critters that depend on them\, and how to get involved in the Vernal Pool Project. \nPlease wear tall\, waterproof boots.
