SUMMARY:Stewardship Workday at The Highlands (Second Saturday)
DESCRIPTION:Details\nTime to get to work on one of our newest projects! \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Blandford Nature Center are collaborating to transform the former Highlands Golf Club property into a natural area for community recreation and education. (Learn more about the project here.) \nThe Highlands has quickly started its transition from golf course to nature but invasive plants have started to come in as well. Help remove some of these invasive species\, like garlic mustard\, before they take over. We will complete other tasks as time allows. \nRSVP\n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite\n\nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 16 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. \nFortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved. \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas. \nTools\, work gloves\, water\, and snacks will be provided.

SUMMARY:Burn Crew Training
DESCRIPTION:Fire is an important part of the West Michigan landscape. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species\, and improves wildlife habitat\, restoring health to many of our forests\, wetlands\, and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each year in spring\, summer\, and fall. We work with volunteers to conduct many of these burns. Volunteer burn crew members are involved in all stages of prescribed burning\, including burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control\, and monitoring. \nThis training session is required for any volunteers who wish to participate in the Land Conservancy led prescribed burns and will provide all the information you will need to have to be a member of a burn crew. Prior experience is not required. \nFor more questions about the training contact Justin Heslinga\, Stewardship Director.

SUMMARY:New Year's Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual New Year’s Day hike which will be held this year at Huyser Farm Park. \nThe Land Conservancy worked with the Huyser Family in 2000 and protected the property with a conservation agreement. Soon after\, the property was transferred to Laketown township and made into a park for the use and enjoyment of the community. \nWe will meet at the Township’s parking lot (on the west side of 64th Street\, just south of the intersection with 142nd) and take the pathway that leads to the Huyser’s old farmstead. Then we will continue into the forest\, where we will see some of the largest Sassafras trees in the area. The trail ends in the woods but we won’t!  We will make a loop through the mixed hardwood-pine forest to the pond\, then explore the open sandy area before passing by the blueberry fields on our way back to our cars. The woods and fields should be beautiful in the snow. It won’t take more than 1 ½ hours to cover about 2.5 miles\, but a portion will be off-trail and the ground will likely be snowy. Dress for the conditions and you can always look forward to the warmth of restaurants/bars in nearby Saugatuck and Holland afterwards! \n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Trail Building at Maas Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Details\nHelp us fix up a new trail at Maas Family Nature Preserve! Well-maintained trails give people better access to a natural area while limiting damage to the area in total. \nThe Maas Family Nature Preserve is home to a rare ecosystem\, known as an “oak-pine barren.” Check out our interview on Fox 17 here or our blog post to learn more about the work we’ve done restoring this preserve. We aim to protect this ecosystem and the many species it harbors\, including the endangered Karner blue butterfly. \nBecause parking is limited at the preserve\, please park at the White Pine Trail Access Point on 12 Mile\, just East of Summit Ave (map). Land Conservancy staff will be at the parking lot to lead you a short distance to the preserve. \nIn addition to helping your local preserve and learning about this special ecosystem\, you will enjoy the stunning bloom of colorful lupine flowers. \nWe will provide tools for pruning and raking\, gloves\, and water. We recommend wearing long sleeves and pants. \nRSVP\nContact Justin Heslinga at 616-451-9476 or by e-mail to register.

SUMMARY:Stewardship Workday at Brower Lake Nature Preserve (Second Saturday)
DESCRIPTION:Details\nHelp keep our forests healthy and beautiful! Join us as we remove invasive garlic mustard from an oak forest at Brower Lake Nature Preserve. \nRSVP\nContact Justin Heslinga at 616-451-9476 or by email to register. \nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 16 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore.
