DESCRIPTION:About White Lake Guided Nature Walks\nExplore and enjoy the pristine natural areas of White Lake as you are led by an expert area naturalist. Each walk will feature a specific topic\, such as coastal dune conservation\, local ecology\, or the importance and challenge of maintaining natural areas in the city. \nEstablished in 2006\, White Lake Guided Nature Walks take place June through October on the first Saturday of each month. There is no cost to attend. \nThe program is a partnership of Great Lakes Consulting\, the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce\, and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. It is sponsored by Arconic (formally Alcoa Howmet) and coordinated by Great Lakes Consulting. \nDetails\nAbout the Walk\nThe topic for the walk is “Coastal Dune Conservation.” This walk takes place at Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve. The meeting location is Meinert Park. The guide for this walk is April Scholtz\, Land Protection Director for the Land Conservancy. \nThe walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp and will end at approximately noon. The walk is free. \nWhat should you bring?\nAttendees are encouraged to bring insect repellant\, water\, and snacks if needed. Dress appropriately for the weather\, and wear comfortable and sturdy shoes (no flip-flops). Other suggested items to bring include: sunscreen\, hat\, umbrella\, binoculars\, camera\, sketchpad\, and pencils or pens. \nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for walks is suggested but not required. Over the winter\, a cottage was removed from a high point on the dunes and soon new trails will be developed with a lookout at this point. Volunteers will be helping to clean up the area in preparation for new trails to be built as well as doing some invasive species removal and general beach clean up as time allows.

SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike & Paddle
DESCRIPTION:The Land Conservancy and Ottawa County Parks are teaming up for National Trails Day!  \nThe afternoon will begin with a guided paddle on the Pigeon River\,* one of Ottawa County’s hidden gems\, winding through wetlands and forests and passing by one of the Land Conservancy’s conservation agreements. The paddle will be led by staff from the Land Conservancy and will meet up with a guided wildflower hike upon arrival at Hemlock Crossings. The wildflower hike will be led by a park naturalist who will help point out spring ephemeral wildflowers along the trails.  \nParticipants can chose to join either or both events (registration required for paddling). \nThose who participate in the hike can make the return paddle with the group after the hike around 2:30 PM\, or paddlers may return on their own at any time. \n*Paddlers will need to bring their own canoes or kayaks.  \nDetails:\n \nThe Paddle\nMeet at: Pigeon Creek Kayak Launch at 10:30 AM (map)\nPark at: Pigeon Creek Kayak Launch\, Pigeon Lake Public Access (may require parking fee) or on Crab Drive just north of the bridge. (The second two options are a short paddle from the Kayak launch). \nThe paddle will take about an hour and half\, ending at Hemlock Crossing. Sandwich lunches will be provided for those who register for the paddle.  \nThe Hike\nMeet at: Hemlock Crossing Nature Education Center at 1 PM (Paddlers will be brought to the meet-up location)\nPark at: Hemlock Crossing (8115 W Olive Rd\, West Olive\, MI 49460)\nThe hike will last about an hour and a half. SUMMARY:Burn Crew Training
DESCRIPTION:Fire is an important part of the West Michigan landscape. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species\, and improves wildlife habitat\, restoring health to many of our forests\, wetlands\, and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each year in spring\, summer\, and fall. We work with volunteers to conduct many of these burns. Volunteer burn crew members are involved in all stages of prescribed burning\, including burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control\, and monitoring. \nThis training session is required for any volunteers who wish to participate in the Land Conservancy led prescribed burns and will provide all the information you will need to have to be a member of a burn crew. SUMMARY:New Year's Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual New Year’s Day hike which will be held this year at Huyser Farm Park. \nThe Land Conservancy worked with the Huyser Family in 2000 and protected the property with a conservation agreement. Soon after\, the property was transferred to Laketown township and made into a park for the use and enjoyment of the community. \nWe will meet at the Township’s parking lot (on the west side of 64th Street\, just south of the intersection with 142nd) and take the pathway that leads to the Huyser’s old farmstead. Then we will continue into the forest\, where we will see some of the largest Sassafras trees in the area. The trail ends in the woods but we won’t!  We will make a loop through the mixed hardwood-pine forest to the pond\, then explore the open sandy area before passing by the blueberry fields on our way back to our cars. The woods and fields should be beautiful in the snow. It won’t take more than 1 ½ hours to cover about 2.5 miles\, but a portion will be off-trail and the ground will likely be snowy. Dress for the conditions and you can always look forward to the warmth of restaurants/bars in nearby Saugatuck and Holland afterwards! \n \nPowered by Eventbrite

DESCRIPTION:About White Lake Guided Nature Walks\nExplore and enjoy the pristine natural areas of White Lake as you are led by an expert area naturalist. Each walk will feature a specific topic\, such as coastal dune conservation\, local ecology\, or the importance and challenge of maintaining natural areas in the city. \nEstablished in 2006\, White Lake Guided Nature Walks take place June through October on the first Saturday of each month. There is no cost to attend. \nThe program is a partnership of Great Lakes Consulting\, the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce\, and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. It is sponsored by Arconic (formally Alcoa Howmet) and coordinated by Great Lakes Consulting. \nDetails\nAbout the Walk\nThe topic for the last walk of the season is “A Living Forest.” This walk takes place at Hilt’s Landing\, which is located behind Michigan’s Heritage Park. The meeting location is Michigan’s Heritage Park parking lot. The guide for this walk is consulting forester David Wilson. \nThe walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp and will end at approximately noon. The walk is free\, and the entry fee to the parking lot for Michigan’s Heritage Park is waived. \nWhat should you bring?\nAttendees are encouraged to bring insect repellant\, water\, and snacks if needed. Dress appropriately for the weather\, and wear comfortable and sturdy shoes (no flip-flops). Other suggested items to bring include: sunscreen\, hat\, umbrella\, binoculars\, camera\, sketchpad\, and pencils or pens. \nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for walks is suggested but not required. DESCRIPTION:About White Lake Guided Nature Walks\nExplore and enjoy the pristine natural areas of White Lake as you are led by an expert area naturalist. Each walk will feature a specific topic\, such as coastal dune conservation\, local ecology\, or the importance and challenge of maintaining natural areas in the city. \nEstablished in 2006\, White Lake Guided Nature Walks take place June through October on the first Saturday of each month. There is no cost to attend. \nThe program is a partnership of Great Lakes Consulting\, the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce\, and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. It is sponsored by Arconic (formally Alcoa Howmet) and coordinated by Great Lakes Consulting. \nDetails\nAbout the Walk\nThe topic for September’s walk is “The Challenge of Dune Conservation.” This walk takes place at Meinert Park\, and the meeting location is the lower parking lot. The guide for this walk is the land protection director for the Land Conservancy of West Michigan\, April Scholtz. Read more about April on the “About Our Team” section of our website\, or click here. \nThe walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp and will end at approximately noon. The walk is free\, however State or local park fees apply. \nWhat should you bring?\nAttendees are encouraged to bring insect repellant\, water\, and snacks if needed. Dress appropriately for the weather\, and wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. Other suggested items to bring include: sunscreen\, hat\, umbrella\, binoculars\, camera\, sketchpad\, and pencils or pens. \nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for walks is suggested but not required.
