Now’s your chance to complete the required training to join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s Burn Crew! \nFire is an important part of maintaining many West Michigan ecosystems. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species and improves wildlife habitat—restoring health to our forests\, wetlands and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each spring\, summer and fall. Volunteer burn crew members play an important role in all stages of prescribed burning\, assisting with burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control and monitoring. \nAttending this training is required to join the burn crew. Past burn crew members are encouraged to attend the training as a refresher\, as well. Space is limited\, and pre-registration is required to attend. \nSign up for the training to become a part of the Land Conservancy’s burn crew and play a role in a critically important ecological restoration activity! \nRegister to Attend\nRegistration for this training is full. SUMMARY:New Year's Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual New Year’s Day Hike! This year we will be hiking the John Woollam Trail in Saugatuck. The trail’s namesake\, John Woollam\, has been a long-time supporter of the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and many conservation efforts throughout the Great Lakes region. The hike will take us through the Dunegrass conservation easement\, which the Land Conservancy helped protect in 2015\, as well as the Mount Baldhead and Oval Beach parks. These properties are part of a natural greenway of protected lands\, providing critical forested shoreline habitat for migratory birds and butterflies. \nWe will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Mount Baldhead Park. The moderate hike is 2.5 miles round trip and will take us on a footpath through beautiful forested dunes and out to the Lake Michigan shoreline. Trail conditions will depend on the weather\, so please check the forecast before you come and prepare appropriately!  \nPlease register to attend the hike below. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free hands-on workshop focused on the basics of trail building. Learn how thoughtful trail design keeps our communities\, streams\, and natural areas healthy. Local experts will cover proper tool selection\, trail design\, and building techniques to help you create or reimagine your own nature trail and maximize the enjoyment of your land. \nWe’ll cover tips to reduce trail maintenance\, reroute trails or correct issues\, and lower the impact on your natural area. \nParticipants will walk and learn from the trails at Seidman Park\, have the opportunity to build a new trail\, and decommission an existing trail. \nKent County’s Seidman Park is a 400-acre natural area of rolling hills\, coldwater streams\, wetlands\, and oak woodlands. This park also contains a segment of the North Country Trail\, which stretches from New York to North Dakota and is the longest continuous trail in the National Trails System. \nAll are welcome. Training and all supplies are included. Great for all ages! Bring a water bottle\, gloves\, and dress appropriately for the weather and for getting your hands dirty. \nPre-registration is encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. This fall\, the Land Conservancy is hosting two unique gallery exhibitions featuring and selling the artwork created for Preserved!  \nThe public is invited for a first chance to take home pieces capturing the beauty of Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve\, The Highlands\, Saul Lake Bog and more at the exhibitions’ opening receptions.  \nThe second exhibition at LaFontsee Galleries in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, will kick off with an opening reception on Thursday\, Oct. 17 from 5-8 p.m. Registration is on sale for $50. DESCRIPTION:In July\, the Land Conservancy of West Michigan was able to pay off the outstanding mortgage and transfer its portion of Ottawa Sands to Ottawa County Parks\, completing the park system’s acquisition of the scenic property. Generous support from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund\, The Conservation Fund\, as well as our community made it possible for this once-mysterious stretch of dunes and Grand River shoreline to become a public park with tremendous opportunities for outdoor recreation. Join us for a dedication to celebrate this achievement! \nThe evening will include naturalist-led hikes starting at 4:30 and 6 p.m. A short ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. This is an outdoor event\, so please be sure to dress for the weather! \nThis event is free to attend. No registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:For the past eight months\, 16 artists with ties to West Michigan have been visiting natural areas protected by the Land Conservancy. Using diverse approaches\, these painters\, photographers\, ceramicists and fiber artists have crafted pieces capturing the vibrant natural surroundings found in the protected lands. This fall\, the Land Conservancy is hosting two unique gallery exhibitions featuring and selling the artwork created for Preserved!  \nThe public is invited for a first chance to take home pieces capturing the beauty of Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve\, The Highlands\, Saul Lake Bog and more at the exhibitions’ opening receptions.  \nThe first exhibition at the Frauenthal Center Reception Gallery in Muskegon\, Michigan\, will kick off with an opening reception on Thursday\, Oct. 3 from 5-8 p.m. Registration is on sale for $50. All ticket and art sales will benefit the Land Conservancy. Drinks and appetizers will be served. \nRegister to attend here!

DESCRIPTION:Details\nKick off your new year by joining our Land Protection Director\, April Scholtz\, for an 11 AM hike of Ottawa Sands on New Years Day. This will be a great opportunity learn more about the partnership project between the Land Conservancy and Ottawa County Parks\, as well as a chance to take in some stunning\, wintry views of the new park. \nPlease RSVP if you plan on attending. Meet at the entrance gate to the property\, on the south side of North Shore Drive just west of Coast Guard Park. There are limited parking spaces near the entrance gate\, more across the road at Coast Guard Park\, and more slightly further away at North Beach Park. From there\, we will hike into the property\, around the lake\, and out to the Grand River shoreline. It shouldn’t take more than 1.5 hours to cover about 2.5 miles. Prepare to walk on an unpaved trail and some uneven ground. Dress for the conditions\, and you can always look forward to the warmth of restaurants/bars in nearby Spring Lake and Grand Haven afterward! \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Details\nHelp remove invasive shrubs at Brower Lake Nature Preserve and help the native plants here to thrive. \n \nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 16 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. \nFortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved. \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas. \nTools\, work gloves\, water\, and snacks will be provided.
