Now’s your chance to complete the required training to join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s Burn Crew! \nFire is an important part of maintaining many West Michigan ecosystems. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species and improves wildlife habitat—restoring health to our forests\, wetlands and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each spring\, summer and fall. Volunteer burn crew members play an important role in all stages of prescribed burning\, assisting with burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control and monitoring. \nAttending this training is required to join the burn crew. Past burn crew members are encouraged to attend the training as a refresher\, as well. Because of your support\, the preserve now includes a mature hardwood forest near the lakeshore that migrating animals like butterflies\, hawks and songbirds depend on for food and shelter as they travel along the windy coast of Lake Michigan. We are grateful for all the supporters that helped ensure the permanent protection and enjoyment of this natural land.  \nJoin us for a dedication to celebrate this achievement!  \nWhen: Thursday\, September 30\, 5:00-7:00 PM (open house)\nWhere: Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve. Park in the Meinert County Park parking lot.  \nThe evening will include naturalist-led hikes. A short ceremony will begin at 5:45 PM. Light refreshments will be provided. Please register to attend! \n \nAbout the Guide  \nAs a lifelong “nature nerd\,” Courtney Allen first became interested in monarch butterflies during her time at Grand Rapids Community College\, where she took a zoology class that offered extra credit for rearing caterpillars. Courtney felt a connection to these seasonal migrants as she had recently returned from living abroad in Mexico. She completed two terms as a seasonal intern with Grand Rapids-based Michigan Butterflies\, a butterfly farm and citizen science-based monitoring initiative. In 2018\, she made the trip to the Oyamel forest of El Rosario Sanctuary\, part of the monarch butterfly’s overwintering grounds in Michoacàn\, Mexico.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brower Lake Nature Preserve to remove invasive garlic mustard! Tools\, water\, and snacks will be provided. Please register to attend! \n \nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 16 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. Fortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved. \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas. \nTools\, water\, and snacks will be provided. \nPlease review our COVID-19 volunteer protocols: \n\nVolunteers may not participate if they feel sick or if they have been recently exposed to anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.\n6-foot social distancing must be maintained at all times.\nDisinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer will be provided to clean hands and any shared surfaces (e.g.\, pens for sign-up).\nMask use is required. Disposable masks will be provided.\nVolunteers must supply their own work gloves.\nSnacks and water will be individually packaged.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water to limit the use of bottled water.\nTools will be sanitized prior to the workday. Volunteers will be assigned a tool (or tools) at the beginning of the workday and will use only their tool(s) throughout the event.\n\nFor the most up-to-date recommendations for your personal safety\, please refer to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and/or your county health department.
