DESCRIPTION:Nicole Feenstra of Wild Ones Wellness will lead us on a calming mindfulness walk through Minnie Skwarek Nature Preserve. \nSlow down and learn about the various ways one can spend meaningful time in nature. During this walk we will pause\, reflect\, and breathe\, allowing our body to connect with the land. The walk will be roughly 1 mile\, but we will let both the group and nature set the pace. At the end of our walk\, we will use natural pieces from the land (found on the ground) to collectively create a piece of art. \nPlease Note: \nSpace is limited for this event! Please register to attend. \nThere is no parking lot at Minnie Skwarek Nature Preserve. Attendees are encouraged to carpool and park on either side of Leonard Street. Please be careful crossing the street into the preserve! \n\nRegister on EventBrite

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice at Saugatuck Dunes State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice marks the height of Michigan’s long\, sunny days. Soak up the late evening sunshine and join brothers Joel and Josh Betts on a guided exploration of Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Joel will highlight unique ecological features and identify birds and plants in the park and Josh will share history and folklore associated with the Summer Solstice as we take in the beauty of these protected forested dunes. \nWe will complete a 3.7-mile loop starting on the south trail through dune forest to a rare\, protected interdunal wetland\, finishing with a short beach walk before heading back along Livingston trail. Plan for an approximately 2-hour hike along sandy trails with some steep hills. \nWe will meet in the main parking lot of Saugatuck Dunes State Park (North Outer Loop Beach trailhead). A parking fee may apply to those without a Recreation Passport. \nAbout Saugatuck Dunes State Park \nSaugatuck Dunes State Park is a favorite of both resident and tourist nature enthusiasts\, birdwatchers\, and hikers. In the 1970s\, a community coalition of concerned citizens came together with a goal of protecting this property that was once a seminary and then state prison and police office. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan was intimately involved in that coalition who helped to protect the park. At the time\, our organization was run entirely by volunteers and we were called the Natural Areas Conservancy of West Michigan (NACOWMI). Protecting Saugatuck Dunes State Park’s ecosystems was our first land protection project. \n\nRegister on EventBrite

DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to take part in a prescribed burn? Now’s your chance to complete the required training to join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s Burn Crew! \nFire is an important part of maintaining many West Michigan ecosystems. Prescribed burning encourages native vegetation\, reduces invasive species and improves wildlife habitat—restoring health to our forests\, wetlands and grasslands. \nThe Land Conservancy of West Michigan conducts prescribed burns on its nature preserves each spring\, summer and fall. Volunteer burn crew members play an important role in all stages of prescribed burning\, assisting with burn site preparation\, ignition\, fire control and monitoring. \nAttending this training is required to join the burn crew. Past burn crew members are encouraged to attend the training as a refresher\, as well. Space is limited\, and pre-registration is required to attend. \nSign up for the training to become a part of the Land Conservancy’s burn crew and play a role in a critically important ecological restoration activity! \nRegister to Attend\n

SUMMARY:Migration: Monarch Butterflies and the Great Lakes Flyway
DESCRIPTION:Join The Land Conservancy of West Michigan for monarch butterfly migration viewing at the Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve! \nSeptember is peak monarch migration season for the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Let’s bid these amazing animals farewell on their 3\,000 mile journey to the Oyamel forests of central Mexico! Land Conservancy Events Intern Courtney Allen will guide our exploration of the preserve.  \nWe will meet in the parking lot at Meinert County Park\, 8355 Meinert Park Rd\, Montague\, MI 49437. Courtney felt a connection to these seasonal migrants as she had recently returned from living abroad in Mexico. She completed two terms as a seasonal intern with Grand Rapids-based Michigan Butterflies\, a butterfly farm and citizen science-based monitoring initiative. In 2018\, she made the trip to the Oyamel forest of El Rosario Sanctuary\, part of the monarch butterfly’s overwintering grounds in Michoacàn\, Mexico.
