DESCRIPTION:Throughout the summer\, construction crews have been hard at work bringing a buried stream back to the surface at The Highlands\, a natural area protected in partnership between Blandford Nature Center and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. The work is nearly complete! The new stream will provide valuable habitat\, manage the flow of stormwater\, and improve water quality in the Grand River watershed. The project was made possible with support from the City of Grand Rapids\, the Michigan Department of Environment\, Great Lakes\, and Energy\, the Kent County Drain Commissioner\, Natural Resources Conservation Service\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, and the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds. \nJoin us to celebrate the completion of the project and plant trees along the new stream at The Highlands! \nWe will hike to the project site (<0.5 miles from the parking lot at The Highlands) where we will enjoy fall refreshments and a short program with speakers from Blandford Nature Center\, the Land Conservancy of West Michigan\, and the City of Grand Rapids. DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice marks the height of Michigan’s long\, sunny days. Soak up the late evening sunshine and join brothers Joel and Josh Betts on a guided exploration of Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Joel will highlight unique ecological features and identify birds and plants in the park and Josh will share history and folklore associated with the Summer Solstice as we take in the beauty of these protected forested dunes.  \nWe will complete a 3.7-mile loop starting on the south trail through dune forest to a rare\, protected interdunal wetland\, finishing with a short beach walk before heading back along Livingston trail. Plan for an approximately 2-hour hike along sandy trails with some steep hills. \nWe will meet in the main parking lot of Saugatuck Dunes State Park (North Outer Loop Beach trailhead). A parking fee may apply to those without a Recreation Passport. \nAbout Saugatuck Dunes State Park \nSaugatuck Dunes State Park is a favorite of both resident and tourist nature enthusiasts\, birdwatchers\, and hikers. In the 1970s\, a community coalition of concerned citizens came together with a goal of protecting this property that was once a seminary and then state prison and police office. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan was intimately involved in that coalition who helped to protect the park. At the time\, our organization was run entirely by volunteers and we were called the Natural Areas Conservancy of West Michigan (NACOWMI). SUMMARY:Second Saturday Workday at Flower Creek Dunes Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us to plant trees at Flower Creek Nature Preserve! Invasive forest pests such as beech bark disease have killed many large trees on the property. The trees we will plant will aid in our goal of helping the forest become more resilient to predicted future pests and severe drought as a result of climate change. This project is in cooperation with Trout Unlimited and is funded through a grant through the US Forest Service and Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. \nWe will meet in the parking lot of Meinert Park. Tools\, water\, and snacks will be provided. Please register to attend! \n \nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 16 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. Fortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved. \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas. \nTools\, water\, and snacks will be provided. \nPlease review our COVID-19 volunteer protocols: \n\nVolunteers may not participate if they feel sick or if they have been recently exposed to anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.\n6-foot social distancing must be maintained at all times.\nDisinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer will be provided to clean hands and any shared surfaces (e.g.\, pens for sign-up).\nMask use is encouraged. Disposable masks will be provided.\nVolunteers must supply their own work gloves.\nSnacks and water will be individually packaged.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water to limit the use of bottled water.\nTools will be sanitized prior to the workday. Volunteers will be assigned a tool (or tools) at the beginning of the workday and will use only their tool(s) throughout the event.\n\nFor the most up-to-date recommendations for your personal safety\, please refer to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and/or your county health department.
