DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan as we plant trees at Flower Creek Dunes! \nThis event will happen rain or shine – please come dressed for the weather and wear quality shoes/boots. Tools\, water\, work gloves\, and snacks will be provided. \nParking is available at Meinert Park\, located at the west end of Meinert Park Road in Montague. There are restrooms available seasonally in the Meinert Park parking lot.   \nParking is available at Meinert Park\, located at the west end of Meinert Park Road in Montague. Please park in the northernmost section of the parking lot. We will gather in the parking lot and will hike into the preserve together. \nRegister to Attend \n  \n\nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 20 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. \nFortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved! \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas.

SUMMARY:Black Friday Prairie Planting at Wege Foundation Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:For years\, Land Conservancy of West Michigan staff and volunteers have spent the fall collecting seeds from native grassland plants. These seeds are then sorted\, dried\, and separated from chaff before they can be sown. Historically\, this hard work has been celebrated with a seed planting workday on the Friday after Thanksgiving at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve. \nThe tradition of seed planting on Black Friday\, which is most known as a doorbuster shopping extravaganza\, started because it’s an optimal time to get seeds in the ground. Over the years\, this workday has become an annual tradition\, as it’s a way for people to “opt outside” by spending the day in nature (and far away from a shopping mall). \nIn 2025\, with the help of our dedicated volunteers\, the Land Conservancy of West Michigan celebrated 25 years and the completion of the Saul Lake Prairie project. This year\, we are focusing our Black Friday Prairie Planting efforts elsewhere. \nWe will be gathering this Black Friday at Wege Foundation Natural Area for our annual seed sowing tradition. While the location is different\, the work is the same\, and we hope you will join us! We will gather at 10am\, hike into the preserve together\, sow seeds in a new restoration site\, and watch what grows. \nThis event will happen rain\, snow\, or shine – please come dressed for the weather. Tools\, water\, and work gloves will be provided. \nParking + Preserve Access: Parking is available in the paved Wittenbach Agri Science Center parking lot. We will gather near the building and will hike into the preserve together. \nRegister to Attend
