SUMMARY:Second Saturday Workday at Dumaw Woodland Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan as we remove invasive shrubs at Dumaw Woodland Nature Preserve and work to restore healthier conditions to this important habitat. \nThis event will happen rain or shine – please come dressed for the weather. Tools\, water\, and snacks will be provided. Please wear boots and bring your own work gloves. \nThis preserve has an off-road parking area\, located just off Hogan Road. Look for an LCWM sign marking the entrance\, then follow the two-track and posted signs south\, about a quarter mile\, until you arrive at the parking area. You will pass an oil rig access road – please do not park on or block the oil rig access road on your way into the preserve. We will gather at 9am in the parking area near the preserve signage\, and will hike to the workday location together. \nRegister to Attend \n\nAbout Second Saturday Events\nThe Land Conservancy’s 20 nature preserves contain an incredible diversity of natural features including prairies\, forests\, and wetlands that are great places to explore. However\, invasive species and altered natural processes threaten to degrade the ecological quality of many of our preserves. Active management is often needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of these wonderful natural areas\, and we need your help. \nFortunately\, through our Second Saturdays event series\, there are now plenty of opportunities to get involved! \nFrom 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, the Land Conservancy will host a volunteer event that focuses on ecological restoration activities including invasive species removal\, seed collecting\, and native plant installation. Volunteers may also be involved with trail maintenance\, general clean-up\, or other tasks that help visitors better enjoy our magnificent natural areas.

SUMMARY:Moth Sheeting and Nocturnal Sketching at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT! Your enthusiasm for bugs is truly inspiring\, and we are officially at capacity. Please stay tuned: we’ll be announcing more bug-based events soon!  \n______ \n  \nThis summer\, join LCWM\, Querkus Creative\, John Ball Zoo\, GRAM and Bug Club as we shine a spotlight on some of our favorite nighttime pollinators: moths!  \nThe stars of each night’s show will vary depending on the time of season\, geographic location\, and habitat type. For this event\, we’ll be partnering with the John Ball Zoo\, Querkus Creative\, GRAM and Bug Club to bring their local moths centerstage. \nUsing a practice called lightsheeting (or moth sheeting)\, which is a method used by entomologists and nature enthusiasts alike\, we will observe and identify moths at night. This method involves hanging a white sheet and illuminating it with a bright light\, which attracts moths and other night-flying bugs. This non-invasive technique is a great way to learn as a citizen scientist\, and adds to our scientific knowledge of our local biodiversity. We would recommend downloading iNaturalist prior to the event. \nThis event will happen outside and after dark – please come dressed for the weather and activity. We recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight\, and to wear long pants and socks to protect yourself from ticks. In case of severe or dangerous weather\, the event may be postponed or cancelled – if this is the case\, registrants will be notified of any changes via email and social media. \nThere is a grass parking lot at this preserve. Parking is free\, and we will gather in the lot at 8:30pm (just before sunset) before hiking into the preserve together. \nRefreshments will be provided. We hope you join us as we gather to witness first-hand some of nature’s superstar insect talents during this summer tour. \nRegister To Attend \n  \n

The permanent protection of these places often requires active management to ensure they stay healthy and resilient in the face of encroaching invasive species\, climate change\, and altered natural processes. \nAt our Second Saturday Workdays\, we invite volunteers to participate in these acts of care. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month\, volunteers meet at a preserve and help manage invasive species\, plant native seeds\, maintain trails\, and more. Together\, we create visible\, lasting change we can return to and build upon. Here\, your hands shape the future\, and the future has your fingerprints on it.
