Events Intern

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan seeks an Events Intern to support the organization’s outreach and development efforts. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and independent land trust dedicated to helping people protect, enjoy, and care for natural land in West Michigan.

Position Type: Internship, part-time (8-12 hours/week), non-exempt

Compensation: $14/hour

Supervisor: Annual Giving Manager & Communications Specialist

Position Summary: The Events Intern will assist with special events (e.g., guided hikes, volunteer appreciation picnic, fundraisers), outreach, and promotions. The Events Intern will be able to explore aspects of event planning, development, and communications work in a nonprofit environment.

Potential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support staff with event planning, such as coordinating vendors, securing sponsorships, printing materials, and contacting volunteers/participants
  • Maintain event supplies
  • Update event content on social media and on the website
  • Help with online event registration and related data entry
  • Assist in the creation and distribution of digital and print event promotional materials
  • Support staff with event execution, including set up/tear down
  • Participate in Outreach Committee meetings
  • Perform other event-related tasks as assigned


  • High school degree
  • Enrolled in relevant coursework or a recent graduate of a relevant degree program
  • Relevant volunteer, job, and/or academic experience
  • Interest in the nonprofit sector or special events and strong desire to learn
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated
  • Comfortable interacting with a variety of individuals (volunteers, donors, event attendees, vendors)
  • Competent using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Familiar with major social media sites
  • Committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Comfortable being outside

Terms of Employment

This is a part-time (8-12 hours/week), non-exempt internship position running mid-June through September 2021. Work reporting location is 400 Ann St. NW, Suite 102, Grand Rapids, MI and remote. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in a clerical office setting, though events will be held outside. Some remote work capacity/ability is anticipated. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, filing cabinets and multifunction printer/copier. 

Physical Demands

This role is sedentary for some tasks and active for others. It would require some bending and lifting in the office and in the context of eventsincluding set up and tear downModerate physical exertion would be required for any preserve, easement, or land project visits. Walking multiple miles over uneven terrain will occasionally be required.


This position requires occasional travel for meetings and eventsTransport must be arranged to and from offsite events, which will take place throughout the West Michigan area. Mileage and expenses are reimbursed based on Land Conservancy policies.
